Ahmadinejad to Attend 50th Anniversary of AU in Ethiopia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will take part in the ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, later this month, a spokesman said on Tuesday.
The announced was made by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Araqchi during his weekly press briefing in Tehran today.
The African Union Commission (AUC) says 75 Heads of States and Governments from AU member states are expected to attend the 21st African Union Summit, scheduled to hold from May 19 to May 27 in Addis Ababa.
A statement by the Commission’s Directorate of Information and Communication in Addis Ababa on Saturday, said 450 journalists had been given accreditation to cover activities of the summit, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the defunct Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and the 10th anniversary of the African Union (AU).
The OAU was established on May 25, 1963 in Addis Ababa on a signature of the OAU Charter by representatives of 32 governments including Nigeria, while 21 States joined gradually over the years.
South Africa became the 53rd member on May 23, 1994 after the first multi-racial elections that ushered in Dr Nelson Mandela as the first democratically elected black African president of the rainbow nation.

Ethiopian Justice Minister Ato Brehan Hailu has been fired from his job on Friday, May 10, 2013, reliable sources disclosed to Fortune. Brehan has received a letter from the Prime Minister’s Office, signed by Hailemariam Desalegn, late on Friday, according to these sources. Brehan has been serving in this capacity since 2005. He was moved to Justice after his previous ministry, Ministry of Information, was dissolved by law.
However, the decision to remove the Minister from Office has come as little surprise in the government circle. He has lost his position in the powerful executive committee of the ruling EPRDF, when elections were held back in March 2013. He was under fire during a convention of his party, the Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM), held in Bahir Dar in March, held as a prelude to the EPRDF congress, which was held in the same city.
Seconded by a member to the central committee seat in the ANDM, Brehan was harshly criticized by the bigwigs of the party for his failure and incompetence while serving at the Justice Ministry.
Brehan has not been immediately available for comment, despite Fortune’s repeated attempts.

ADDIS ABABA — An Ethiopian court on Thursday dismissed the appeal of blogger Eskinder Nega and opposition leader Andualem Arage who were jailed last year for terror-related offences.
“The sentencing is still correct so there is no reduction,” said Supreme Court judge Dagne Melaku, confirming Eskinder’s jail term of 18 years and Andualem’s life sentence.
