Aster aweke receives honorary degree

Aster—born in 1959 in Gondar, Ethiopia—was raised in the capital city of Addis Ababa. Her father was a senior civil servant in the Imperial government.

By the age of 13, Aster was determined to become a musician, and began her career at Hager Fikir Theatre in Addis Ababa.

Starting in her late teens, she was performing in clubs and hotels in the capital with bands such as the Continental Band, Hotel D’Afrique Band, Shebele Band and Ibex Band, before they became the internationally known as Roha Band.

Aster’s distinct style has been influenced by other Ethiopian singers, such as Bizunesh Bekele.

Launching a solo career, she was encouraged by musical entrepreneur Ali Tango, who financed and released five cassettes and two singles of her music. By 1981, Aster had become disillusioned by Ethiopia’s oppressive political climate following the death of Haile Selassie, and relocated to the United States. Temporarily settling in the Bay Area of California, with plans to pursue higher education within a period of two years, she settled in Washington, D.C., where one of the largest Ethiopian expat communities in the country existed. There, she became increasingly popular within the Ethiopian community, performing in restaurants and clubs.

Aster also remains popular in Ethiopia. In 1997, she performed in Addis Ababa for a crowd of over 50,000 people. In 2003, Aster also performed a two-part concert series to raise funds for relief and school initiatives in Ethiopia. The first concert was held in November on Eid Al-Fitr day at the Addis Ababa Stadium, with an audience of 40,000 in attendance. The second performance was a gala-dinner at the Sheraton Hotel.[1] More recently, on May 9, 2009, Aster performed in front of a crowd of 10,000 spectators during the Peace Through Unity, Unity Through Music concert held in the capital’s Millennium Hall, alongside other Ethiopian music artists.

In a day Gondor University Celebrating its 60th Year and at a Student Graduation Aster Aweke received an honorary Doctorate degree among four other Candidates.

2.Eritrea sells Port Assab to Ethiopia for $1 Billion
Eritrea today said it will sell its Assab Port for a cool $1 Billion dollar to its former colonial power, Ethiopia. The settlement could take up to 120 days before Ethiopia gets its own sea outlet for the first time in 20 years.

Ethiopia currently uses the port in Djibouti for its export and import trade and is costing the country more than 700 million dollar year.

In 1869 Assab was bought by the Rubattino Shipping Company from the local Sultan in Ethiopia, and was acquired by Italy (1882) who found the port inadequate for exploitation of its hinterlands, and came to use Assab as a coaling station. During the twentieth century Assab became Ethiopia’s main port. The Soviet Union later built an oil refinery there. During the Eritrean War of Independence and famine of the 1980s, food aid was brought to Eritrea and the Ethiopian province of Tigray through this port.

The port facilities were greatly expanded in the early 1990s, with the construction of the new terminal, but the port has declined since trade with Ethiopia was terminated in 1998 as a consequence of the Eritrean-Ethiopian War.

Ethiopia now hopes to modernize the port after the deal is finalized. The port is currently used as a watering hole for Eritrean camels. But the Ethiopian government said, it will move the camels to a different location

Ethiopian Film ‘Difret’ Wins World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance Film Festival

New York (TADIAS) — Difret, an Ethiopian film directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, won the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Saturday evening.
The ninety-nine minute drama is based on the true story of Aberash Bekele (Hirut), a 14-year-old from a small, rural village — not far from Addis Ababa — whose widely publicized arrest for murder in the late 1990s ensued an epic court battle that resulted in her acquittal on the grounds of self-defense. The case and ordeal of Hirut (played by teen actress Tizita Hagere) legally ended the long-upheld cultural tradition of marriage by abduction in Ethiopia. Difret is the first Ethiopian film to be featured at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film’s producers include Mehret Mandefro, Leelai Demoz, Zeresenay Berhane Mehari as well as Executive Producers Angelina Jolie, Julie Mehretu, Jessica Rankin, Francesca Zampi and Lacey Schwartz.
Other credits include Cinematographer: Monika Lenczewska; Editor: Agnieszka Glinska; Production Designer: Dawit Shawel; Composers: David Schommer and David Eggar.

Bedele Brewery cancels Teddy Afro’s “Journey of Love” Concert

Awramba Times (Addis Ababa) – Confidential sources close to Awramba Times disclosed that Bedele brewery, Heineken NV’s subsidiary in Ethiopia has cancelled Teddy Afro’s nationwide “Journey of Love” Concert.

Oromo Activists called on Bedele brewery to stop sponsoring Tewodros Kassahun’s nationwide tour that was scheduled across different cities of Ethiopia?

Two weeks ago, Ethiopian singer Tewodros Kassahun (aka Teddy Afro) told the local Enqu magazine that he considered emperor Minelik’s imperial expansion a “holy war”. This remark deeply offended thousands of Oromos as an ethnically-motivated “remark” against Ethiopia’s largest ethnic group.

Oromo activists all over the world had campaigned beer drinkers in Ethiopia to ditch Bedele products and also pressure regional officers to withdraw the sponsorship.

Anti-Teddy Afro campaign catches fire on social media

(OPride) – A hyperactive social media campaign to boycott Bedele Brewery’s exclusive sponsorship of controversial Ethiopian singer Tewodros Kassahun has garnered more than 13,000 supporters in less than 24 hours.Teddy-Afro2

Bedele Brewery, a local subsidiary of the Dutch beer maker Heineken NV, announced its agreement with Kassahun for a year long national tour at a press conference in Addis Ababa last week.

Kassahun, better known by stage name Teddy Afro, is a polarizing pop star in Ethiopia. His fans admire his musical talent while critics despise his unapologetic hero-worship of past Ethiopian rulers. Teddy has songs idolizing both emperors Haile Selassie and Menelik II.

The viral campaign, which goes with a hashtag #BoycottBedele, is asking beer drinkers in Ethiopia to ditch Bedele products and also pressure regional officers to withdraw the sponsorship. It has reportedly been featured on the state-run Oromia radio, which broadcasts in Oromo language to millions of listeners in the populous state.
